Therapeutic Riding
Therapeutic Riding is a form of recreational therapy preformed by a NARHA certified riding instructor. Mimiking the movement of the human pelvis, the movement of the horse allows riders to gain muscle strength and tone, increased range of motion and flexibility, increased trunk control, and improved sensory integration. Both rider and horse work as a team to achieve goals and objectives set forth by the instructor. Some of these goals include learning to steer the horse, trotting, posting and two-point over poles. Remedial math, hand-eye coordination, interaction with others, and increased self confidence and self-discipline are also achieved through the riding lessons.
All riders at Hand and Hearts who participate in the TR program are given the opportunity to compete in both local and state shows, including Hands and Hearts' own spring and fall home show, a spring show at Jacobs Ladder in Hahira, and the state Special Olympic equestrian competition in Perry, Ga. Because of our growing show team, all riders eligible to compete are rotated onto the active show team for a two-year rotation at their competition level.
