Memorial
This page is dedicated to all of the horses that have given so much and Hearts for Horses, and are no longer able to be with us.

Sadie (1976-2003)
Sadie came to Hands and Hearts for Horses after being a plantation horse for most of her life, and was instantly welcomed into our family. She was a rock solid therapy horse, even if she was blind in one eye. We miss her terribly. She was donated to Hands and Hearts by Janie Davison.

Lady Luck "Lucky" (1974-2005)
Lucky was a beautiful horse that always worked hard for her riders. Not only did she perform perfectly at shows, but she made a special place for herself in each of our hearts. Lucky was Hands and Hearts 2005 Horse of the Year, and she was our Queen as well. She was donated to Hands and Hearts by Margaret Prather.

Darlin' "Double D" (1986-2006)
Darlin’ was one of the founding horses of the Hands and Hearts for Horses program, and he was a big wanna-be tough guy. His whole life revolved around food, but he loved his job (as long as he got to eat). He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Tim and Karen Singletary.

 |
Taylor "Tay-Tay" (1982-2006)
Big and boney, Taylor was a chestnut Thoroughbred gelding and Charlie’s best friend. They would often take the long way around when re-entering the barn at feeding time. Taylor enjoyed daring Charlie to sneak into other horse’s stalls and steal food. Now that both of them are no longer with us, we feel that we have lost more than horses. We have lost friends. He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Raynor Taylor.

Pierre "Petey" (1984-2006)
Pierre came to Hands and Hearts from Sweet Briar College along with Calvin. He worked beautifully in our program until the end of summer when we discovered that he was no longer sweating. He moved out to Karey’s home barn at the beginning of Fall, but his conditioned only got worse. We miss him greatly and think of him often. He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Sweet Briar College.

 |
Cocoa "The Princess" (1975-2008)
Cocoa was a pony that helped with our smaller riders. The little bay Welsh would often run ahead of her herd (Kaylee, SunFlower, & Jet) during dinner time and help herself to their feed buckets. She truly shined though when she got to do a few small jumps– a throwback to her childhood. She was donated to Hands and Hearts by Box Hall Plantation.

Topper (1975-2003)
Topper was one of those horses that had done it all, and was retiring to an easier life as a therapy horse. He was the kind of horse that every center dreams of having, and we are lucky enough to say that we got the chance to know and work with him. He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Ed and Rozzi Davis.

Blaze "Joker" (1979-2004)
If Blaze had been a human, he would have been that Uncle you always wanted to spend time with. Always willing to listen and make you smile, his favorite riders were the littlest ones. He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Charles King.

 |
Big Jim "Jimmy"(1972-2009)
Many of the horses looked up to Jim. Before coming to our barn he worked in the Police Force, keeping his town safe from over-grown grass. Jimmy returned home to the farm of Paul and Cathy Taber in the summer of 2008 for the remainder of his days. He was leased to the program by Paul and Cathy Taber. Jimmy passes away at the ripe old age of thirty-seven and will be missed by all who knew him.

Lady Bug "Miss Bug"(1984-2009)
Lady Bug was one of the newest addition to the Hands and Hearts equine staff,
even though it feels like she had always been one of the team. Her
refined and short body, along with her expert training and
responsiveness maked Bug perfect for our delicate but fiesty young
riders. Everyone at Hands and Hearts is saddened by the sudden loss of our Miss Bug and she will always be known as one of the best horses to have ever worked at Hands and Hearts. Lady Bug was donated to Hands and Hearts by Buddy Vincent. |
 |
Traveler "Travis" (1980-2010)
Traveler is a big boy with a big heart. He worked with us for as
long as he could before retiring down the road to his own pasture. Often
times we will ride some of his old buddies down to his fence to say hi
and talk about old times. He was donated by Janie Davison.
|
 |
Kit "Kitty Kat" (1983-2009)
Kit was a small chestnut Walking Horse cross gelding and a good friend
of Bert and Buster (a non-program horse). Despite fighting an ongoing battle with thrush, Kit loved working in the program and was a favorite among our riders. He was donated to Hands and Hearts by Janie
Davison and will be greatly missed by rider, volunteers and staff alike.
